Using a range of ceramic techniques, I create sculptures spanning from the intimate to the large-scale. My creative process echoes recurring themes from my childhood, with nostalgia serving as a cornerstone of my artistic expression.
On a personal level, clay has evolved into more than a medium; it's a vessel for reconnecting with my cultural heritage. I draw inspiration from Mesoamerican and pre-colonial vessels that surrounded me, influencing my shapes and forms. Through blending colors and textures, I create hybrid sculptures that reflect the dynamic interplay between past and present, tradition and adaptation.
In my artistic exploration, I contemplate the complexities of what we leave behind and what we carry forward, recognizing how this push and pull shapes our present realities. Clay, with its elastic yet unforgiving nature, serves as the perfect medium for narrating stories of displacement and its profound impact on identity and memory.
As a recent recipient of a Canada Arts Council grant, I want to expand beyond sculptural ceramics to explore new mediums. Through this exploration, I hope to enrich the current narratives in my work and enhance their impact.
