Who should apply?
We invite applications from artists from across Canada who are looking for a secluded place in which to reflect and refine their artistic discipline(s). Applicants must demonstrate a focus on their art form and be comfortable with rustic, off-grid living conditions. Successful artists are required to provide their own transportation to and from the landing on Koshlong Lake, their own food for the duration of the residency, and other supplies noted on the Visitor’s Guide. More detailed information will provided to the successful applicants. Individuals who engage in all forms of artistic expression are eligible to apply. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
Halls Island Residency thrives on the contribution of unique and diverse artists. We encourage and welcome applications from artists of any discipline and we will consider all qualified individuals regardless of:
· Ancestry, colour, race · Ethnicity or place of origin
· Place of origin · Creed, Religion
· Family or marital status · Sexual orientation
· Gender, gender identity, gender expression · Disability
We value equality, diversity and inclusion, both in our artists and our volunteers. We are committed to promoting and maintaining trust and confidence.
The dignity of all individuals is important to us. We will not tolerate or condone any form of discrimination, harassment and/or other inappropriate behaviour, and we will not ignore any allegations of such acts brought to our attention.
What do you need to know before applying?
Residencies will be nine or ten days long. A specific calendar of dates is on the application form.
As you will have noted from this website, this is a water access only residency. Getting to Halls Island requires climbing in and out of a boat, as well as up and down stairs from the dock to the living quarters. Additionally, the general terrain and buildings may not be accessible for those with mobility issues. Please contact us with any questions regarding accessibility.
Please note that limited solar power and absence of WiFi limits the type of arts activities that Halls Island can support. Cell service, however, does work on the island. There is also no running water (drinking water is provided).
Artists may apply alone, with one other compatible artist, or may choose to share the residency with another selected artist. One residency will be available for an application from a group of three artists who work collaboratively. Please find details on the application form.
